Yacht charter Azores

Charter a yacht in the Azores>/strong> and explore these islands! The Azores are a group of nine Portuguese isles located in the Atlantic Ocean, about 1500km from Lisbon and covering a total area of 2,333km squared. They were originally discovered in the Middle Ages, although they were rediscovered in the modern ages and claimed by Philip II of Portugal and Spain. Try something different to the busy streets of Lisbon in Portugal and enjoy a yacht charter in one of the most special sailing holiday destinations. So set sail in one of our crewed or bareboat yachts and begin cruising with your skipper on your holiday in these coastal areas that are a hidden part of Portugal!

It wasn’t until the 20th century that the archipelago became an autonomous region of Portugal, within the European Union. They are of volcanic origin and have a rugged, but picturesque landscape, making them the perfect place to spend a relaxing sun, sea and sand holiday.

Moreover, there are some fascinating and gorgeous places that you simply have to visit during your yacht charter, sailing to places like Ponta Delgada, Faial, Lisbon, Horta, Terceira and the Isle of San Miguel are a must.

Boat hire here has a great deal on offer for you, including sailing in the open ocean, swimming, fantastic sailing routes, diving and the opportunity to visit the quaint and characterful cities. Portugal’s highest point, Mount Pico, is located on the island of Pico, although the majority of the islands have a more crater-like landscape.

One of the key attractions of a yacht charter is the tranquil beauty. The local tourist industry is not very heavily developed, and for this reason the majority of the beaches and rural areas are undisturbed. Some of the most popular destinations are; Ponta Delgada, Horta, Sao Miguel, Angra do Heroísmo, Pico, Terceira, and Sao Roque do Pico.

Climate

The climate is mild, with average temperatures of 13ºC in winter and up to 25ºC during summer. Winters are not very cold and in summer the climate is pleasant due to the islands’ subtropical location and the influence of the Gulf Stream. There is a humid climate, but also offer a tropical landscape which is very different to Portugal’s Mediterranean climate.

Despite being located deep into the Atlantic Ocean, the seawater ranges from 16ºC to 25ºC, making a yacht charter there an ideal option throughout the year. In 2012, the isles won the Quality Coast award for their natural landscapes and sustainable travel industry.

One of the many advantages of choosing a yacht charter in the Azores is not only their beautiful and natural landscapes, perfect for nature lovers, but also their fantastic sailing conditions, and coastal sights. They have amazing beaches, far away from mass tourism, and great sailing facilities as each island has its own airport.

Whale watching

One of the main reasons to visit these Portuguese islands! With boat hire in this area, this option is even more attractive, as you can moor your boat in the sea and see the animals during their migration in summer. If you prefer to travel at a different time of the year, you can also see dolphins and other marine life. The dolphins and whales are spectacular sights and could even swim and jump alongside your yacht!

Those who choose yacht charter in the Azores in winter will be able to see blue whales stop by the island, a remarkable opportunity to see these magnificent creatures. The biodiversity of the region is unparalleled, with over 115 protected species and 215 endangered species, and for this reason conservation laws are very strict on the islands.

Water sports

If you’re interested in sports such as diving or snorkelling, the Azores are an ideal destination, as you can go sailing and anchor your boat in many beautiful locations. If you like other water sports such as skiing, surfing, paragliding, horse riding, fishing, hang gliding, or other activities such as mountain biking and hiking through the volcanic landscape, these isles are the perfect sailing destination for you.
